The word chemotherapy can sound just as frightening—if not more—than the word cancer. But as a Hematologist, I see chemotherapy as a gift, almost like an act of God. It saves lives and prolongs them in ways that feel miraculous for cancer patients.

Chemotherapy is a modern invention—like the phone or the microwave—born from technology. It is a remarkable tool, but only in the right hands & given at the right time.

Its primary purpose is to destroy cancer cells, allowing the body’s normal cells to recover & get back to their work. Most chemotherapy drugs are not highly selective—they affect cancer cells & healthy cells alike. However, healthy cells are naturally more resilient & can repair themselves better.

The art of chemotherapy lies in finding the balance: delivering the right dose, at the right time, for the right duration, while effectively managing side effects. That’s where my training as a Hematologist becomes crucial.

Still, some cancers resist even our best efforts. No matter what we give, they return—especially aggressive cancers like leukaemia and lymphoma. Thankfully, technology continues to evolve to overcome these challenges.

This is how I view chemotherapy: it is one of my most important tools to help patients. Overcoming the fear and stigma around it requires time, patience, and continuous conversation. But it is worth every moment we invest. As medical practitioners, we must never tire of explaining—because when patients understand, they face treatment with more trust, courage, and hope.
